The hamlet of Belmont is home to the First Capitol Historic Site of Wisconsin, where a group of legislators met in 1836 and founded territorial Wisconsin's government. The original buildings make up this historic site and relate the story of how the group met for 46 days to establish a judicial system, determine railroad routes and make Madison the state capitol. The site is open from 10am to 4pm Wednesday through Sunday from June through September.
